ELECTRICIAN'S DEATH
Mr. Grant also found that the death of Ralph Leech, aged 41 years, of Charles street, East Melbourne, second electrical operator at the Yarraville terminal station of the State Electricity Commission, had been accidental.
Evidence was given that on October 17 Leech was engaged in cleaning portion of the apparatus at the station which had been rendered "dead" for the purpose. A companion who was working with him heard him exclaim "My arm has gone dead" and then saw him collapse. Leech died shortly afterwards.
David Dunham, of Otira road, Caulfield, the electrical inspector at the station, said that from an inspection of the plant which he had made after the death of Leech he had formed the opinion that Leech had attempted to climb a steel framework, and through slipping, lack of caution, or faintness, had put an arm through the framework and made contact with some of the "live" apparatus.
Leech, before entering the service of the Electricity Commission, had an interesting naval career. Born in Warwickshire, he served for 22 years in the Royal Navy, and for part of that period he was on loan to the Royal Australian Navy as torpedo instructor. On retiring from the Royal Navy in 1929 he returned to Australia in H.M.A.S. Canberra, and was appointed to the staff of the State Electricity Commission. He was aged 41 years and leaves a widow and one young daughter.
