Extract from the e-mail from Sarah Chandler - Mar 2006

"Lily's story has always interested me. As you know, she was at the Health
and Happiness Public House on Census night 1881, staying with her sister and brother-in-law. She was there with her mother and brother, James, (my g.grandfather). Her father was on the vessel "Victor" in Newhaven.
When she was nearly 17, she had an illegitimate son, Alfred, He went to sea as a boy and later, when in his teens, he emigrated to Canada, working in various jobs until he joined the Canadian Mounted Police. He returned to marry Alice Hammond, who lived in Clacton, on 7 Nov 1910 in Brightlingsea.
She joined him in Canada and had two children, Alfred Junr. and Winifred.
He enlisted in the Army Medical Corps during the war and was then able to
go home to Brightlingsea and see his family, but was killed in action 2 Sep
1918.
Lily was married to Alfred Savage for nearly two years, 1887 - 1889
when he died of pneumonia following an accident at sea.
She was then married to Harry Wood 1890 - 1929, but that came to an end when he shot himself."
